Sungai Citarum adalah sumber kehidupan bagi kurang lebih 35 juta jiwa di Provinsi Jawa Barat dan DKI Jakarta. Sungai Citarum menjadi sorotan akibat ketidakpedulian akan peran pentingnya untuk masyarakat.
Meskipun sempat dipandang sebelah mata, Citarum terus dibenahi. Dimulai dengan adanya langkah-langkah strategis mulai dari penghijauan kawasan hulu, alih profesi petani sayur, hingga pembangunan sejumlah fasilitas publik. Inilah komitmen untuk mengembalikan harum Citarum. Sebuah komitmen yang harus diikuti dengan kesadaran masyarakat karena Citarum adalah ruang hidup kita.

Di sekitar Desa Cihampelas, ada 12 titik penumpukan sampah yang menjadi target tim Satgas Citarum Harum. Atas permintaan dan semangat masyarakat yang besar, pembersihan pun dilakukan secara gotong royong dengan armada dan peralatan seadanya demi Citarum Harum.

Masyarakat di kawasan hilir Sungai Citarum; tepatnya di Muara Gembong, turut merasakan imbas dari kerusakan ekosistem di Sungai Citarum. Air yang menjadi sumber kehidupan mereka, berubah menjadi tidak layak konsumsi. Begitu pun dengan 14.500 Ha lahan yang rusak akibat abrasi dan pasang-surut yang menyebabkan banjir.
Namun ditengah bencana tersebut, mereka memilih untuk bergerak. Salah satunya, penanaman pohon mangrove untuk mengendalikan abrasi. Hal ini dilakukan masyarakat Muara Gembong untuk mengembalikan fungsi dan jasa lingkungan Sungai Citarum.

Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater and household sewage, both runoff (effluents), domestic, commercial and institutional. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants. Its objective is to produce an environmentally safe fluid waste stream (or treated effluent) and a solid waste (or treated sludge) suitable for disposal or reuse (usually as farm fertilizer). Using advanced technology it is now possible to re-use sewage effluent for drinking water, although Singapore is the only country to implement such technology on a production scale in its production of NEWater.[2] Source of the article published in description is Wikipedia. The Citarum River in Indonesia is the world’s most polluted river. One of the main polluters is the fashion industry: 500 textile factories throw their wastewater directly into the river.
The filmmakers teamed up with international scientists to investigate the causes and consequences of this pollution. With the help of concerned citizens, the ‘Green Warriors’ team analyzed water samples, rice, children’s hair, etc. and discovered that toxic chemicals are endangering the lives of the 14 million Indonesians who use the Citarum water. What was once considered paradise is now a brown sludge of human waste and dangerous substances like nonylphenol, antimony and tributylphosphate. These findings prompted the Indonesian government to change its wastewater regulations. Recently, President Joko Widodo announced a new plan to clean up the Citarum. The fashion brands questioned in this documentary promised to better monitor their Indonesian suppliers.

Twisting and turning through the jungles of Java is a river so polluted it’ll make your skin melt. On this episode, we bring you the world’s dirtiest river.
Located east of Jakarta, being the 3rd biggest river on the island of Java, the Citarum river has claimed the top spot as earth’s most polluted. Covering an area of 5,000 sq miles or 13,000 sq kms the water from the Citarum river is relied upon by 30 million residents. 5% of the river’s water is needed for 2000 industrial factories and irrigation for rice farms. 80% of the surface water is used by the citizens of the nearby capital city Jakarta.

Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from municipal wastewater, containing mainly household sewage plus some industrial wastewater. Physical, chemical, and biological processes are used to remove contaminants and produce treated wastewater (or treated effluent) that is safe enough for release into the environment. A by-product of sewage treatment is a semi-solid waste or slurry, called sewage sludge. The sludge has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or application to land.
We kayaked down the world's most polluted river, the Citarum River, to raise awareness about plastic pollution.
With more than 15 million people living on the Citarum River, many of them rely on their water supply. It is imperative that change happens to this once pristine Indonesian river.
